Supporting a Loved One

When someone you care about is struggling, knowing how to help makes all the difference.

What to Say

✅ Say This:

  • "I've noticed you seem [sad/anxious/different]. I'm worried about you."
  • "I'm here to listen if you want to talk. No judgment."
  • "What can I do to help?"
  • "You don't have to go through this alone."
  • "Have you thought about talking to someone?"

❌ Avoid Saying:

  • "Just think positive" or "Snap out of it"
  • "Other people have it worse"
  • "It's all in your head"
  • "Have you tried [insert unsolicited advice]?"
  • "You're being dramatic"

What to Do

Supporting loved ones

Listen Without Fixing

Sometimes people just need to be heard. You don't need to solve their problems—just be present and listen.

Offer Specific Help

Instead of "Let me know if you need anything," try: "Can I bring you dinner Tuesday?" or "Want me to come with you to your appointment?"

Help Them Find Resources

Offer to help research therapists, call insurance, or fill out applications for financial assistance. Navigating the system is overwhelming when you're struggling.

Stay Connected

Check in regularly, even with a simple text. Depression makes people withdraw—your consistent presence matters, even if they don't respond right away.

If They're in Crisis

If someone is talking about suicide, showing warning signs, or in immediate danger:

  • Take it seriously. Don't leave them alone.
  • Call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) together
  • Text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line)
  • Call 911 if they're in immediate danger
  • Remove access to means of self-harm if possible

Take Care of Yourself Too

Supporting someone with mental health struggles can be emotionally draining. You can't pour from an empty cup.

  • Set boundaries around what you can and can't do
  • Talk to someone about your own feelings (therapist, friend, support group)
  • Remember: You can't fix them. You can only support them.
  • It's okay to take breaks and prioritize your own mental health
