How to Choose a Therapist
Finding the right therapist matters. Here's what to look for and questions to ask.
What to Look For
1. Credentials & Specialization
Look for licensed professionals (LCSW, LPC, Psychologist, Psychiatrist). Check if they specialize in your specific concern (anxiety, trauma, depression, etc.).
2. Therapy Approach
Common approaches include CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), and EMDR (for trauma). Ask about their methods.
3. Logistics
Consider location (in-person vs telehealth), schedule availability, insurance acceptance, and cost. Don't let logistics be the reason you don't get help—we can assist with financial barriers.
4. Personal Fit
You should feel comfortable opening up. If something feels off after 2-3 sessions, it's okay to try someone else. Finding the right fit is important.
Questions to Ask
- What's your experience treating [my specific issue]?
- What therapy approach do you use?
- How long are sessions and how often do we meet?
- Do you accept my insurance? What's the cost without insurance?
- How do you measure progress?
- What happens if I need help between sessions?
- How long does treatment typically take?
